İtalyan basını: Vatikan yine Ortaçağ’a döndü

Eda BERKBAYRAK / MİLANO (DHA)

Katolik dünyasının dini lideri Papa 16. Benedikt’in sözlerine İtalyan politikacılar farklı tepkiler verdi.

Haberde, Papa 2.

BERLİN (A.A) 17 Eylül 2006 Pazar www.hurriyet.com.tr

Diyanet İşleri Başkanı Ali Bardakoğlu, dini liderlerin gerektiğinde yanlışlarını kabul etmeleri gerektiğini söyledi.

Bardakoğlu, “Der Spiegel” dergisinin internet sayfası “Spiegel-Online”a verdiği demeçte, Vatikan'dan yapılan açıklamadan memnuniyet duyduğunu ifade ederek, “Papa, İslamiyet'e saygı duyduğunu ve Müslümanların hislerini rencide etmek istemediğini söyledi.

Böyle yapmayarak doğrudan İslamiyet'in teolojik temellerini eleştirdi.

İslam dünyasının her taraftan eleştiriye açık olması gerektiğini kaydeden Bardakoğlu, “Bunun tek taraflı olmaması gerekir. Her dinin eleştirilebilmesi lazım.

Konuşmaya her zaman açığım” diye cevap verdi.

Gül: Papa'nın ziyaretinde değişiklik yok

Dışişleri Bakanı ve Başbakan Yardımcısı Abdullah Gül, BM Genel Kurulu'nun 19-29 Eylül günleri arasındaki toplantılarına katılmak üzere ABD'ye gitti.

Bakan Gül, Esenboğa havaalanında yaptığı açıklamada, New York'ta BM Genel Kurulu'nun 61. dönem toplantılarına katılacağını ve ardından Başbakan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan'a Washington ziyareti sırasında eşlik edeceğini söyledi.
Papa 16. Benediktus'un İslam diniyle ilgili açıklamalarının, Papa'nın kasım ayındaki Türkiye ziyaretinde bir değişikliğe yol açıp açmayacağının sorulması üzerine Gül, dinler ve kültürler arası anlayışın artırılmaya çalışıldığı bir dönemde bu açıklamaların talihsiz olduğunu söyledi ve Papa'nın ziyareti konusunda Türkiye açısından herhangi bir değişikliğin söz konusu olmadığını belirtti. Vatikan: Papa üzgün

Papa 16. Benedikt, sözlerinin İslam dünyasında tepkilere yol açmasından dolayı "üzgün olduğunu" Vatikan aracılığıyla bildirdi. Vatikan Başbakanı Kardinal Bertone’nin açıklamasına göre Papa yanlış anlaşıldığını iddia ediyor. İslam dünyası hálá gerçek bir özür beklerken gözler Papa’nın bugünkü ayinde yapacağı konuşmada.

PAPA 16.

Bazı gazetelerde, Papa Benedict'in tuzağa düşürüldüğü, öldürülmek istendiği ve kasım ayı sonunda planlanan Türkiye ziyaretine çıkmaması gerektiği yönünde haberler yer aldı.

Papa, Bizans İmparatoru İkinci Manuel'in, "Muhammed, vadettiği inancı kılıçla yayma emrinden başka hangi yeniliği getirmiştir, gösterin bana?" sözlerinden alıntı yaparak, Hz.

Mısır Dışişleri Bakanlığı, Papa 16'ncı Benedict'in İslam hakkındaki sözlerinden duyulan üzüntüyü bildirmek için, Vatikan'ın Kahire elçisini bakanlığa çağırdı. Bakanlıktan yapılan açıklamaya göre, Dışişleri Bakanlığının talimatı üzerine elçiyi çağıran Mısır Büyükelçisi Vefa Basim, Papa'nın ''durumu düzeltmek için hemen bizzat harekete geçmesi'' gerektiğini söyledi.

Afganistan:

Endonezya:
Dünyanın en kalabalık Müslüman nüfusa sahip ülkesi Endonezya'daki dini liderler de Papa'nın İslam ve cihatla ilgili sözlerini kınadı ve farklı dinler arasındaki ortamın bozulmamasına gayret gösterilmesini istedi.

Kuveyt:
Kuveytli bir milletvekili, ülkede kilise inşa edilmesinin yasaklanmasını istedi.

Fas:
Fas Kralı Muhammed, Papa 16'ncı Benedict'in İslam ve Hz. Muhammed hakkındaki sözleri üzerine, Fas'ın Vatikan büyükelçisini danışmalarda bulunmak üzere ülkeye çağırdı.

Resmi MAP ajansının bildirdiğine göre, Dışişleri Bakanlığı'nın açıklamasında ''Papa 16'ncı Benedict'in İslam ve Müslümanlar hakkındaki kırıcı ifadeleri üzerine büyükelçi Ali Açhur, bugün danışmalarda bulunmak üzere geri çağırıldı'' denildi. Büyükelçinin çağrılmasıyla ilgili talimatın Kral Muhammed'den geldiği belirtildi.

Tunus:

* Neden üzgün olduğunu açıkladı?

Roma Katolik Kilisesinin ruhani lideri Papa 16.

     NEW YORK TEMASLARI

Gül, New York’taki temaslarını takiben, ABD’ye resmi ziyarette bulunacak Başbakan Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’ın heyetine katılarak, Washington’a geçeceğini de bildirdi.

Papa 'çok üzgün'

Hz. Muhammed ve İslam'la ilgili konuşmasının ardından özür beklenen Papa 'sözlerinin Müslümanları incitmesinden son derece üzgün olduğunu' açıkladı
ttttttPapa 'çok üzgün'
Özür sayılır mı?
Bizans İmparatoru Paleologos'un 'Muhammed'in yeni diye getirdiği sadece şer ve insanlık dışıdır' sözlerinden alıntı yapan Papa 16. Benediktus, dün geri adım attı. Papa, Müslümanların sokaklara dökülmesi ve özür talepleri karşısında Vatikan Devlet Sekreteri aracılığıyla şu açıklamayı yaptı:
Aslında 'ters yorumlanmış'
"Papa, sözlerinin bazı bölümlerinin Müslümanların duyarlılığını inciticiymiş gibi bir hava oluşturmasından, kendi niyetine tümüyle ters biçimde yorumlanmasından ötürü son derece üzgündür. İslamiyet'e inananlara saygısını teyit ederek sözlerinin gerçek anlamının anlaşılmasını umuyor."
'Üzüntü yetmez, özür dile'
Papa 16.

Hz. Muhammed ve İslam'la ilgili konuşmasının ardından özür beklenen Papa 'sözlerinin Müslümanları incitmesinden son derece üzgün olduğunu' açıkladı

17/09/2006 http://www.radikal.com.tr/haber.php?haberno=198924

ROMA/KAHİRE/KUALA LUMPUR - Almanya ziyaretinde Bizans İmparatoru 2. Manuel Paleologos'un "Muhammed'in yeni diye getirdiği sadece şer ve insanlık dışıdır. Tıpkı kendi inancını kılıçla yayması gibi" sözlerini alıntılayıp İslam âlemiyle yeni krizi tetikleyen Roma Katolik Kilisesi'nin ruhani lideri Papa 16. Benediktus, dün geri adım attı. Papa, sözlerinin İslamiyet'e saldırı olarak yorumlanması karşısında 'son derece üzgün olduğunu' açıkladı. Ama Müslümanlar yatışmış gözükmüyor.

'Diyalogdan yanayım'
Hz.
Suudi Arabistan: Riyad, Papa'dan acil açıklama istedi.

17/09/2006 http://www.radikal.com.tr/haber.php?haberno=198923

AA - LONDRA - Papa'nın Müslümanlıkla ilgili sözleri 28-30 Kasım'daki Türkiye ziyaretinin iptali veya ertelenmesi riski doğururken, ziyaret öncesi Papa'ya verilen raporda, Türkiye'de Batılı anlamda laiklik olmadığı, Hıristiyan azınlığın ise hukuksal düzlemde ayrımcılığa maruz kaldığı yer aldı.
La Repubblica, Papa'nın Almanya'dan dönerken uçakta "Önümüzdeki seyahat Türkiye'ye" dediğini aktarırken, Vatikan'ın resmi tarihçisi Giovanni Sale'nin 16. Benediktus'a sunduğu resmi rapora yer verdi.

* * *

Sanki, 10 asır önce I. Haçlı Seferi'ni başlatan Papa II. Urban ile Pierre Lermit hortlamışlar da 16. Benedikt'in bedeninde yeniden tecessüm etmişler...

'Diyalogcu' kilisenin sefaleti
Beni asıl çıldırtan da, Papa'nın 'cihad'dan söz ederek İslâm'ı terörle suçlamaya kalkışması... Papaz Efendi, aklı sıra Bin Ladin gibi meczupların yaptıklarını, İslâm'a mal etmeye çalışıyor.
IV.
Hugenot'ları, Bogomiller'i keserken de imdada biz yetiştik.
6 milyon Yahudi'yi öldüren Hitler de Katolik'ti (Aklıma gelmişken, Papa'nın babasının Hitler'in yakın dostu olduğunu biliyor muydunuz?).

Murat Belge 17/09/2006 www.radikal.com.tr

Roma Katolik Kilisesinin ruhani lideri Papa 16.

Papa 16. Benediktus, önümüzdeki Çarşamba günü yapacağı konuşmada, Almanya seyahatine ayrıntılı biçimde değineceğini sözlerine ekledi.

Papa'nın sözleri İtalyan basınında

Roma Katolik Kilisesi'nin ruhani lideri 16. Benediktus'un Almanya seyahati sırasında Hz. Muhammed hakkında kullandığı ifadelerin İslam dünyasında yol açtığı tepkiler, bugünkü İtalyan basınında gündemin en önemli maddesi olarak sunuldu.

Gerilim, tüm gazetelerde sürmanşet olarak verildi. Gazeteler, dün itibariyle Papa'nın özür dilemese de Vatikan Devlet Sekreteri (Başbakan) Tarciso Bertone aracılığıyla yaptığı açıklamada "yanlış anlaşılma" dolayısıyla üzgün olduğunu belirtmesine karşın, İslam dünyasındaki tepkilerin büyüdüğüne işaret ettiler.

Mücahitler Ordusu (Ceyş El Mücahidin) adlı Iraklı örgütün, internet aracılığıyla Papa'ya yönelttiği tehdit mesajı da bazı gazeteler tarafından ön plana çıkarıldı.

Corriere della Sera gazetesi, İslam dünyasının Papa'dan özür beklemeye devam ettiğini belirtti. La Repubblica gazetesi, Vatikan'ın açıklamasını, "İslam'ı incitmek istememiştim" manşetiyle duyurdu. Spotta ise "Papa, 'üzgünüm' diyor ama Vatikan'a yönelik tehditler sürüyor. Irak ve Somali'den suçlama. Fas, büyükelçisini geri çağırdı. Nablus'ta kiliselere molotofkokteyli" ifadelerine yer verildi.

La Stampa, gerilim nedeniyle Papa'nın bugün yapacağı Angelus Duası için olağanüstü güvenlik önlemlerine tanık olacağına işaretle, "Papa'ya tehdit. Angelus'a kuşatma" manşetini kullandı.

Spotta ise "Bertone, 'İslam'ı incitmek istememişti' dedi, ancak Türkiye'ye yapacağı seyahat risk altında" ifadelerine yer verildi. Il Messaggero da Vatikan'ın açıklamasını manşete çıkararak, "Papa İslam'ı incitmek istemiyordu" ifadesini kullandı. Gerilim ise ilk sayfadaki spotlarda şu ifadelerle özetlendi:

"Fas Vatikan'daki büyükelçisini geri çağırdı. Türkiye seyahati sallantıda. New York Times'tan eleştiri. Bertone, 16.

(AA)

İtalya'da alarm düzeyi artırıldı

İtalya, Papa 16. Benediktus'a yönelik tepkilerde tırmanışı göz önüne alarak, Vatikan ve kiliseler çerçevesindeki alarm düzeyinin artırılmasını kararlaştırdı.

Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü tarafından yayımlanan genelgede, özellikle radikal İslamcı unsurların bulunduğu yörelerde gerekli önlemlerin alınması istendi.

Genelgede, Papanın Almanya'daki konuşmasının, "Katolik cemaatlere yönelik saldırılar da dahil olmak üzere, bazı İslam ülkelerinde şiddetli eleştirilere maruz kaldığı"na işaret edilerek, "Ülke topraklarında da, benzer protesto gösterileri ve şiddet olayları ihtimal dışı olmadığı için, emniyet amirlerinden, diğer güvenlik güçleriyle de işbirliği yaparak, özellikle radikal İslamcı çevrelerdeki tahkikat faaliyetlerini yoğunlaştırmaları rica olunur" denildi.

Papa, şiddet ve Türkiye

*Londra http://www.sabah.com.tr/babahan.html

Papa 16. Benedikt'in Almanya'nın Regensburg Üniversitesi'nde yaptığı konuşmada, Bizans İmparatoru 2. Manuel Palaeologus'a yaptığı atıf nedeniyle başlayan gerilim Batı basının başlıca konusu oldu.

Papa Benedikt, San Pietro Meydanı'nda her pazar düzenlenen geleneksel Angelus duasında katoliklere seslendi.

İslamiyet’i şiddet yanlısı gösteren Papa 16. Benediktus, Müslümanların ‘özür’ beklentisine “çok üzgünüm” demekle yetindi.

İSTANBUL- Papa 16. Benediktus’un İslam dini ve Peygamber Efendimiz Hz.

Erdogan: Pope must withdraw Islam remarks

Sunday, September 17, 2006 ANKARA - Reuters and TDN

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, joining a global chorus of Muslim protest, said on Saturday Pope Benedict should withdraw "ugly" comments he made about Islam.

The pope's suggestion, made in a lecture last Tuesday in his native Germany, that early Muslims had used violence to spread their faith has sparked fury across the Islamic world along with demands for a public apology.

"The pope spoke like a politician rather than as a man of religion," Erdogan said in televised remarks.

"The statements are ugly and unfortunate. The pope needs to take a step back to preserve inter-religious peace," said Erdogan, a pious Muslim with roots in political Islam.

"We cannot accept these statements. The Islamic world cannot accept them. I think these statements cannot be accepted by the Christian and Catholic world either," he added.

Erdogan was speaking before the Vatican issued a statement saying the pope was sorry for upsetting Muslims in his lecture.

Benedict is due to visit Turkey in November. Turkish officials said they hoped the trip would go ahead as planned.

We hope that feelings will calm down and that the protests will be limited," one official told Reuters when asked if the pope's expression of regret would satisfy Turkish opinion.

"His comments about Islam were unfortunate but we hope his visit to Turkey will go ahead as scheduled in November," the official added.

Benedict has long been viewed in Turkey with some suspicion due to statements made before he became pope last year expressing opposition to Turkish membership of the European Union. Benedict said Turkey did not belong in Europe.

Pope sorry his Islam speech found offensive

Sunday, September 17, 2006 VATICAN CITY - Reuters

Chancellor Angela Merkel and other German politicians defend pope's comments, saying he was misunderstood

Pope Benedict told Muslims on Saturday he was sorry they had found his speech on Islam offensive, expressing his respect for their faith and hoping they would understand the "true sense" of his words.

"The Holy Father is very sorry that some passages of his speech may have sounded offensive to the sensibilities of Muslim believers," Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said in a statement.

The statement came amid mounting anger from Muslims over remarks by the pope in a speech in his native Germany on Tuesday that was seen as critical of their faith. Calls for him to apologize had spread beyond the Islamic world.

In that speech, the pope appeared to endorse a Christian view, contested by most Muslims, that the early Muslims spread their religion by violence.

The Vatican statement said: "Confirming his respect and esteem for those who profess the Islamic faith, he (the pope) hopes they will be helped to understand his words in their true sense."

Before the statement, the tide of Muslim criticism of the Roman Catholic leader swelled on Saturday.

Yemen's president became the first head of state publicly to denounce him and threatened to review ties with the Vatican unless he apologized. Ali Abdullah Saleh, campaigning for re-election, told voters at a rally Benedict had wronged Islam.

Two churches -- neither of them Catholic -- were fire-bombed in the West Bank, although no one was hurt.

But Chancellor Angela Merkel and other German politicians defended his comments, saying he had been misunderstood.

"It was an invitation to dialogue between religions, she told the mass-circulation Bild newspaper in an interview. "What Benedict XVI emphasized was a decisive and uncompromising renunciation of all forms of violence in the name of religion."

Calls for apology:"He should apologize to Muslims," the president of the German Council of Muslims, Ayyub Axel Koehler, told the Neue Presse newspaper on Saturday. "That would be a contribution towards unwinding the tension and creating clarity."

Support for that view came from the New York Times, which said in an editorial on Saturday he must issue a "deep and persuasive" apology for quotes used in his speech.

"The world listens carefully to the words of any pope. And it is tragic and dangerous when one sows pain, either deliberately or carelessly," it said. "He needs to offer a deep and persuasive apology, demonstrating that words can also heal."

The pope on Tuesday repeated criticism of the Prophet Mohammad by the 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who said everything Mohammad brought was evil "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

The pope, who used the terms "jihad" and "holy war" in his lecture, added "violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul."

Muslim figures continued to assail those comments.

"How can (the pope) imply that Muslims are the creators of terrorism in the world while it is the followers of Christianity who have aggressed against every country of the Islamic world?" prominent Saudi cleric Salman al-Odeh said.

"Who attacked Afghanistan and who invaded Iraq? ... The pope's statements are an attempt to put a religious cover on injustice and political aggression practised by the American administration against Muslims."

Elsewhere:

Iraq's government called for calm on Saturday in response to remarks by the pope that have angered Muslims, saying those offended should not take out their anger on the country's small Christian minority. The door of a church in Basra was attacked overnight, in what appeared to be the first strike in Iraq since the comments. "We call on all those who love God's prophets not to carry out actions that will harm our Christian brothers here," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said in an interview with Iraqiya state television.

Indian police detained nearly two dozen angry Muslims protesting the pope's remarks on Islam on Saturday, the second straight day of anti-pope rallies in India's only Muslim majority state of Kashmir. More than 100 supporters of the hardline faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir's main separatist alliance, marched through Srinagar's city center chanting "Down with the Pope," and "Long Live Islam." The protesters scuffled with police who stopped them marching to the United Nations military observer's office in Srinagar, the summer capital of India's Jammu-Kashmir state.

About 1,000 Indonesian Muslims waving flags and shouting "God is Great" marched to the Palestinian Embassy in Jakarta on Saturday to demonstrate their support for the Palestinian people and criticize the pope. The demonstrators, who arrived at the embassy after a 45-kilometer march from their Islamic boarding school in West Java, demanded the al-Aqsa mosque be freed from Israeli control. "As we know up until now the al-Aqsa mosque, which is the Muslims' right, is still under the colonial rule of Islam's enemies," said protest leader Heri Budianto.

A Pope’s Holy War

By quoting a 14th-century Christian emperor on an ‘evil and inhuman’ Islam, Benedict XVI ignites a global storm.
What was he thinking?

By Jon MeachamNewsweek

Sept. 25, 2006 issue - The setting was familiar, the occasion, the speaker thought, fitting. At three in the afternoon last Tuesday, after a quick ride from lunch in the Popemobile, Benedict XVI began a lecture in the Aula Magna of the University of Regensburg in Germany. As Joseph Ratzinger, the pope spent much of his life in the country’s academic milieu; as he spoke to a gathering of scientists in the hall, he reminisced about his teaching days at the University of Bonn. “There was a lively exchange with historians, philosophers, philologists ...” Benedict said early in an address on faith and reason. Citing a conversation between a 14th-century Christian Byzantine emperor and an Islamic Persian, Benedict quoted Manuel II: “‘Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.’”

Within days Benedict found the globe engaged in a “lively exchange,” but it was not, one suspects, the exchange the pope had in mind. The Pakistani parliament voted to condemn him; the leading Shiite cleric in Lebanon asked for a personal apology. “He is going down in history in the same category as leaders such as Hitler and Mussolini,” said Salih Kapusuz, the deputy head of Turkey’s governing party, and officials there suggested the pope should reconsider a trip planned for November.

The Vatican soon issued a grandly titled “Declaration Concerning Pope’s Regensburg Address.” “It was certainly not the intention of the Holy Father to undertake a comprehensive study of the jihad and of Muslim ideas on the subject, still less to offend the sensibilities of the Muslim faithful,” said papal spokesman Federico Lombardi. If the goal, in Lombardi’s words, had been to articulate “a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence,” then Benedict failed.

The pope’s intentions in discussing “holy war” were presumably good—he approvingly quoted an early Qu’ranic “surah” (chapter), which says “there is no compulsion in religion”—and he was right to raise the issue of how to confront and combat the religious extremism that gives rise to terror and violence. Sadly, though, he did so clumsily and obliquely, and, far from opening a constructive conversation, instead exacerbated tensions between Christianity and Islam. The episode also marks the first widely noted break with the spirit of the papacy of Benedict’s beloved predecessor. A reassuring pastor, John Paul II was the first pope to visit a mosque (in Damascus, Syria, in 2000), and he managed to project an air of ecumenicism while holding fast to the fundamentals of faith and doctrine. “This is clearly not John Paul II,” says R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. “It’s a very different direction for the papacy, and reflects Benedict XVI’s worries about secularism, Islam and a declining Christian vigor in Europe.”

Much of the Regensburg address was a meditation on faith and reason, the roots of religiously inspired violence and the need for believers to see God as a figure of love. Roughly put, his argument was this: to Benedict, Islam’s conception of God so stresses God’s will that God can be understood to command the irrational.

For the pope, the Christian encounter with the classical world married faith and reason and thereby precluded, in principle, such misunderstandings of the nature of the God of Abraham, a nature that is, according to this argument, rooted in love and reason, not the will to dominance. Seen in such a light, “jihad,” which means “struggle,” can too easily be taken literally (as a call to violence against others) rather than figuratively (as many Muslim scholars argue it should be).

In the stormy aftermath of the address—on Saturday two churches in the West Bank were bombed—the Vatican argued that the real point of the lecture was to be found in this sentence: “A reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures,” Benedict said, “is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures.” In a post-Regensburg statement, Paul Cardinal Poupard, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, said, “Readers will find that this central theme is far more important than the introductory citation of the Emperor Manuel II ...”

Then why did Benedict quote the emperor in the first place? The most likely answer is that, no matter what the Vatican says now, the pope believes in having what the Catholic theologian and papal biographer George Weigel calls “a hard-headed conversation” about the role of faith in the life of the world. “He knew exactly what he was doing,” says Weigel. “He is saying that irrational violence is displeasing to God. The question Benedict is putting on the table is: ‘Does a significant part of Islam have the capacity to be self-critical?’ ”

Finding a way for the children of Abraham to live together in something approaching peace a perennial challenge, and Benedict understands that. “We must seek paths of reconciliation and learn to live with respect for each other’s identity,” he told a Muslim audience in Cologne last year. There was no such language at Regensburg. He did say Manuel II’s words were “startlingly brusque,” and made certain the audience understood he was reading a quotation, but the pope must have known his words would carry. And by speaking of jihad without alluding to Christianity’s dark history of violence in the name of God—the Crusades, forced conversions, pogroms, the Inquisition—Benedict seemed to be denouncing Islam while failing to acknowledge that any religion, including his own, can be manipulated and perverted to evil ends. “It is very hard to construe the pope’s remarks in a benign way,” says William A. Graham, the dean of the Harvard Divinity School. “Historically, there is no more basis for arguing that Islam is irrational than there is for arguing the same about Christianity or Judaism. In all three you can find tremendous discussion about revelation and reason, and there are people in all three who have landed outside the rational. Islam has bloody borders right now, but Christianity has certainly been bloody, as has Judaism in its more extreme forms.”

Two years before he became pope, Benedict published a book entitled “Truth and Tolerance,” in which he wrote that “religion demands the making of distinctions, distinctions between different forms of religion and distinctions within a religion itself, so as to find the way to its higher points.” One of the pities of Regensburg is that he made no such distinctions about Islam.

Is the ideology of hate that fuels Al Qaeda and its fellow travelers evil? Yes, it is, and too few Muslim leaders have spoken out against it in compelling and memorable terms. An Islamic reformation in which the young are educated to understand faith through critical thinking would, one hopes, push the forces of violence ever farther to the margins. History offers some consolation. “Islam spread far more thoroughly by proselytizing than by the sword,” says Graham. And the tradition most ruthlessly excluded in the first few centuries of the faith was one devoted to extreme violence, the Kharijites.

Going forward, the pope could usefully consult the words of another powerful Christian leader: “And given that Islam and Christianity worship the one God, Creator of heaven and earth, there is ample room for agreement and cooperation between them,” the leader said three months after September 11. “A clash ensues only when Islam or Christianity is misconstrued or manipulated for political or ideological ends.” The leader? John Paul II.

Pope’s remarks unite Iraq’s Sunnis, Shias

9/16/2006 www.aljazeera.com

Setting aside their religious differences, Iraq's Shias and Sunni Arabs united Friday in anger over Islamophobic and highly offensive remarks made by Pope Benedict XVI against Islam and the holly message of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Pope Benedict XVI has been under mounting criticism from the Muslim and Arab world following radical comments he made in a speech in Germany on Tuesday, in which he repeated anti-Islam remarks made by Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II in 14th Century who said that what Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught was 'only evil and inhuman'.

Religious leaders across the Muslim world have called on the Pope to retract his remarks and apologize.

Malaysian leader Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urged the pope to apologize and withdraw his controversial comments, The Associated Press reported.

"The pope must not take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created," the Bernama news agency quoted Abdullah as saying.

"The Vatican must now take full responsibility over the matter and carry out the necessary steps to rectify the mistake."

In Iraq, the Pope’s radical remarks united Iraqis from both communities, the Shias and Sunnis, with clerics from both parties, struggling to prevent an outbreak of civil war, condemning the pontiff's comments as an insult to Muslims and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

"We denounce this slander made by the pope on Islam and the figure of the Prophet Muhammad," The Associated Press quoted Sheikh Salah al-Ubaidi as saying during a sermon in the Shia Muslim-stronghold of Kufa, which was attended by about 5,000 people.

"It is the second assault made on Islam and the prophet. Last year, and in the same month, the Danish cartoon assaulted Islam," he said, in an apparent reference to the offensive caricatures depicting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that were published last year by Danish and other European newspapers, prompting massive protests and calls to boycotts Danish goods in almost all of the Muslim countries.

At the Abdul-Qadir al-Gilani mosque in central Baghdad, Sunni cleric Mahmoud al-Isawi's sermon denounced the Pope's inflammatory comments as a "Western aggressive attack" that was "clearly showing its hatred toward our Islamic religion."

Speaking at a sermon delivered at the offices of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in Iraq's second-largest city, Basra, Shia cleric Sheikh Abdul-Kareem al-Ghazi said the pope's comments ran counter to the Christian faith.

"The pope and Vatican proved to be Zionists and that they are far from Christianity, which does not differ from Islam. Both religions call for forgiveness, love and brotherhood," he said, challenging Benedict or any other senior Vatican official to a debate.

A transcript of the pope's comments obtained by The Associated Press reads: "In the seventh (sura, or chapter of the Quran), the emperor comes to speak about jihad, holy war.

"The emperor certainly knew that Sura 2, 256, reads: 'No force in matters of faith'. It is one of the early suras, from a time -- as experts say -- in which Muhammad himself was still powerless and threatened.

"However, the emperor of course also knew the requirements about the holy war that were later formulated in the Quran. Without going into details like the handling of the owners of the scriptures, or non-believers, he (the emperor) turned to his interlocutors -- in a surprisingly brusque way -- with the central question after the relationship between religion and violence.

"He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.'"

In a statement issued by the Organization of the Islamic Conference on Thursday, the Muslim body said it "regrets the quotations cited by the pope on the Life of the Honorable Prophet Muhammad, and what he referred to as 'spreading' Islam 'by the sword.'"

"The attribution of the spread of Islam around the world to the shedding of blood and violence, which is 'incompatible with the nature of God' is a complete distortion of the facts, which shows deep ignorance of Islam and Islamic history."

Pope 'deeply sorry' for Muslim fury

•Pope says he is "deeply sorry" for reaction to his commentson Islam
•Italian police raise alert level around Vatican, papal summer residence
•Thousands protest at pope's comments; churches in West Bank fire-bombed
•Pope appeared to endorse view early Muslims spread religion by violence

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Rome (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI has said he is "deeply sorry" for the reaction to his comments on Islam and said a quote he used from a medieval text about holy wars did not reflect his personal thoughts.

The pope's speech last week -- in which he appeared to endorse a Christian view, contested by most Muslims, that early Muslims spread their religion by violence -- has sparked protests around the world.

"This was a quote from a medieval text which does not express in any way my personal thoughts," the pope said in his regular Sunday blessing, the Angelus, at his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, southeast of Rome.

The pope told pilgrims he hoped his remarks now and an explanation by the Vatican Saturday were enough to "placate spirits and give the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was an attempt to frankly and sincerely express my great reciprocal and mutual respect with the Muslim faith."

In his speech to professors in Germany Tuesday Benedict, quoting from an obscure medieval text, cited the words of 14th-century Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus, who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed, Islam's founder, as "evil and inhuman."

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached," Benedict quoted. (Full story)

The reaction from Muslims around the world was strong and swift, prompting Italian police to raise the alert level around the Vatican and Castel Gandolfo, a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said measures adopted to safeguard sensitive targets have never been relaxed, but that "obviously, given the circumstances, the attention level has gone up."

The request to raise the alert level on certain targets came in an internal police memorandum, the spokesman said.

In a statement on Saturday the Vatican said the head of the Roman Catholic Church regretted the reaction. But he stopped short of the apology demanded by many Muslim leaders in the Middle East and Asia. (Full statement)

The pope must apologize for his "ugly, unfortunate statements." said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Benedict is scheduled to visit Turkey in November, where he is to meet with Orthodox Christian leaders. Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said on Sunday that visit was still on as planned, according to CNN Turk. (Watch why pope's remarks sparked such a storm -- 2:31)

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry recalled its envoy to the Vatican for consultations. The ministry said King Mohammed VI sent a written message to the pope denouncing his "offending statements."

The Guardian Council in Iran, the constitutional body that examines legislation to be sure it does not conflict with the constitution, issued a statement saying, in part: The statements "emanated from (the) pope's ignorance about Islam."

"(The) Pope has linked Islam to violence and challenged jihad (holy war) at a time when he apparently closed his eyes to the crimes being perpetrated against defenseless Muslims by the leaders of power and hypocrisy under flag of Christianity and Jewish religion."

The council termed Benedict's comments "a series of Western conspiracy against Islam" and warned that such a statement may injure sentiments of the Muslims.

Demonstrations against the pope's comments took place in several cities across Iran on Sunday, Iranian state television reported.

Churches attacked

Meanwhile, Palestinian security sources said a church in Tulkarem was attacked with Molotov cocktails on Sunday, and there was an attempted attack on a church in Tubas, near Jenin.

Authorities were also investigating Molotov cocktail attacks on three churches in Nablus on Saturday, as well as an attack on a church in Gaza.

A group called the "Lions of Monotheism" claimed responsibility for two of the incidents on Saturday, Palestinian security sources said.

In Indonesia, up to 1,000 Muslims rallied in protest at the comments made earlier in the week by the pope, who was citing an obscure Medieval text that characterizes some of the teachings of Islam's founder as "evil and inhuman," video of the scene showed.

Outside the Palestinian Embassy in Jakarta, police looked on as protesters stood behind the gates waving flags while organizer Heri Budianto shouted, "God is great." (Watch other Muslims burn the pope in effigy -- 1:41)

"Of course as we know the meaning of jihad can only be understood by Muslims," Budianto told the crowd. "Only Muslims can understand what jihad is. It is impossible that jihad can be linked with violence, we Muslims have no violent character."

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Saturday urged the pope to apologize and withdraw his controversial comments, according to The Associated Press.

"The pope must not take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created," the Bernama news agency quoted Abdullah as saying, AP said.

"The Vatican must now take full responsibility over the matter and carry out the necessary steps to rectify the mistake."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended the pope on Saturday, telling the mass-circulation Bild newspaper that the pontiff had merely been calling for dialogue with other religions.

"Whoever criticizes the pope misunderstood the aim of his speech," Merkel was quoted as saying, according to Reuters.

"It was an invitation to dialogue between religions and the pope expressedly spoke in favour of this dialogue ... What Benedict XVI emphasised was a decisive and uncompromising renunciation of all forms of violence in the name of religion."

Pope's statement in full

POSTED: 1452 GMT (2252 HKT), September 16, 2006

(CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday he regretted that his speech on Islam offended Muslims and expressed his respect for their faith. Here is the Vatican's statement, according to a translation posted on its Web site:

Given the reaction in Muslim quarters to certain passages of the Holy Father's address at the University of Regensburg, and the clarifications and explanations already presented through the Director of the Holy See Press Office, I would like to add the following:

The position of the Pope concerning Islam is unequivocally that expressed by the conciliar document Nostra Aetate: "The Church regards with esteem also the Muslims. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all-powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth, Who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin Mother; at times they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the day of judgment when God will render their deserts to all those who have been raised up from the dead. Finally, they value the moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting" (no. 3).

The Pope's option in favor of inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue is equally unequivocal. In his meeting with representatives of Muslim communities in Cologne, Germany, on 20 August 2005, he said that such dialogue between Christians and Muslims "cannot be reduced to an optional extra," adding: "The lessons of the past must help us to avoid repeating the same mistakes. We must seek paths of reconciliation and learn to live with respect for each other's identity".

As for the opinion of the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus which he quoted during his Regensburg talk, the Holy Father did not mean, nor does he mean, to make that opinion his own in any way. He simply used it as a means to undertake - in an academic context, and as is evident from a complete and attentive reading of the text - certain reflections on the theme of the relationship between religion and violence in general, and to conclude with a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence, from whatever side it may come. On this point, it is worth recalling what Benedict XVI himself recently affirmed in his commemorative Message for the 20th anniversary of the Inter-religious Meeting of Prayer for Peace, initiated by his predecessor John Paul II at Assisi in October 1986: " ... demonstrations of violence cannot be attributed to religion as such but to the cultural limitations with which it is lived and develops in time. ... In fact, attestations of the close bond that exists between the relationship with God and the ethics of love are recorded in all great religious traditions".

The Holy Father thus sincerely regrets that certain passages of his address could have sounded offensive to the sensitivities of the Muslim faithful, and should have been interpreted in a manner that in no way corresponds to his intentions. Indeed it was he who, before the religious fervor of Muslim believers, warned secularized Western culture to guard against "the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom".

In reiterating his respect and esteem for those who profess Islam, he hopes they will be helped to understand the correct meaning of his words so that, quickly surmounting this present uneasy moment, witness to the "Creator of heaven and earth, Who has spoken to men" may be reinforced, and collaboration may intensify "to promote together for the benefit of all mankind social justice and moral welfare, as well as peace and freedom" (Nostra Aetate no. 3).

Pope: Conversion by violence not of God

POSTED: 2254 GMT (0654 HKT), September 12, 2006

ALTOETTING, Germany (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday that Islamic holy war was against God's nature and invited Muslims to join in a peaceful cultural dialogue.

In a speech at Regensburg University, Benedict made an unusual reference to jihad, or holy war -- a concept used by today's Islamic extremists to justify suicide bombings and other attacks.

Benedict's address was about faith and reason, and how they cannot be separated and are essential for "that genuine dialogue of cultures and religions so urgently needed today."

Citing historic Christian commentary on holy war and forced conversion, the 79-year-old pontiff quoted from a 14th-century Byzantine emperor, Manuel II Paleologos.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.' "

Clearly aware of the sensitivity of the issue, Benedict added, "I quote," twice before pronouncing the phrases on Islam and described them as "brusque," while neither explicitly agreeing with nor repudiating them.

"The emperor goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable," Benedict said.

"Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul," the pope said, issuing an open invitation to dialogue among cultures.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the pope was not giving an interpretation of Islam as "something violent," although he said the religion contains both violent and nonviolent strains.

Benedict did not touch directly on the current controversy over Islamic extremism, although it is an issue he follows with concern. Last year in Cologne, Germany, he urged Islamic leaders to take responsibility for their communities and teach their young to abhor violence.

Last week, he told a gathering of Christian, Muslim and Jewish representatives in Italy that no one can "use the motive of religious difference as a reason or pretext for bellicose behavior toward other human beings."

Benedict will make his first visit to a Muslim country in November, when he is scheduled to travel to Turkey.

Gerlinde Axmann, a 40-year-old social worker, watched Tuesday's speech on one of the large screens set up in a square near the cathedral.

"That was a very important start to dialogue with Muslims amid the terrorist threat," she said, calling Benedict's appeal to reason "a building block toward finding a way to argue with each other without using weapons."

"I think it's very important for him to bring these things up in society," she said. "Muslims aren't going to take us seriously until we become conscious of our own values. For example, they take the pope much more seriously than others in the West."

Quarter million attend Mass

Benedict earlier celebrated Mass for about 230,000 people, the second-largest crowd of his six-day homecoming tour, which ends Thursday.

From atop the altar platform, the pope looked over a throng dotted with blue-and-white Bavarian flags and the yellow-and-white Vatican banners.

In discussing faith and reason, Benedict in his sermon at Mass scoffed at the idea of a "mathematically ordered cosmos" without any hand of God. He said this would mean "nothing more than a chance result of evolution."

"We believe in God. This is a fundamental decision on our part."

Eva Renz dozed in the sun as she waited for the pope, having been on the road since 3 a.m. with her husband and six children.

"His presence is important because he is a representative of Christ," she said. "I brought all the children because it's important for them to see this huge crowd and all the joy."

Some people turned out in spite of disagreeing with Benedict's conservative stands such as his opposition to ordaining women and married men.

Machine shop worker Kurt Kellner, 40, came to the Mass but was skeptical about whether Benedict would win him over. "I know his positions. They're not entirely my opinions. I want to take part in the event," he said, calling Benedict "relatively good" as pope. "He knows how to move people," he said.

In his speech at the university, where he once taught theology, Benedict stressed that "a reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering a dialogue of cultures."

But he assured that his critique of modern reason "has nothing to do with putting the clock back."

"The positive aspects of modernity are to be acknowledged unreservedly," he said.

Pope sorry for offending Muslims

Pope Benedict XVI has apologised in person for causing offence to Muslims in a speech in Bavaria last week.

He said the medieval text which he quoted did not express in any way his personal opinion, adding the speech was an invitation to respectful dialogue.

The Pope has been under intense scrutiny amid angry reactions from throughout the Muslim world.

The 14th Century Christian emperor's quote said the Prophet Muhammad brought the world only evil and inhuman things.

The BBC's Christian Fraser in Rome says many critics will say Sunday's comments should have been attached to his speech in Regensburg, which may well have avoided the controversy that followed.

The Pope appeared on the balcony at his residence at Castel Gandolfo outside Rome for the Angelus blessing on Sunday.

"...I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims," he told pilgrims.

"These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought.

"I hope this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with mutual respect."

Police had promised meticulous security checks in an extended area around the residence but said they would be discreet so as not to disturb the prayers.

Marksmen kept watch on the square from a city hall while officers dressed like tourists, filmed the crowd with video cameras.

Police confiscated umbrellas and bottles of liquid.

Last Tuesday's incident led Morocco to withdraw its ambassador to the Vatican, calling the comments "offensive".

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood had called on the pontiff to say sorry in person.

A statement on a web site purportedly issued by the Iraqi insurgent group, the Mujahideen Army, threatened an attack on the Vatican. The statement could not be independently authenticated.

Protests

Our correspondent says the crisis could not have come at a worse time for the Pope.

Not only is he due to visit Muslim Turkey in November but he has also recently appointed two new men to the jobs of secretary of state and head of diplomacy at the Vatican.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said the comments had been "ugly and unfortunate" and when asked if the Pope's trip would go ahead, he said: "I wouldn't know."

In his speech at Regensburg University on Tuesday, the German-born Pope quoted Emperor Manuel II Paleologos of the Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire.

Stressing that they were not his own words, he quoted the emperor saying: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

He also said that violence was "incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul".

Reactions to the speech have come from such leaders as Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, who said efforts to link Islam and terrorism should be clearly opposed.

Street protests have been held in Pakistan, India, Turkey and Gaza.

In the West Bank city of Nablus, two churches were firebombed on Saturday in attacks claimed by a group which said it was protesting against the Pope's remarks.

Text of Pope's apology

The following is the text of Pope Benedict XVI's remarks regretting causing offence to Muslims in his 12 September speech in the Bavarian city of Regensburg.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The pastoral visit which I recently made to Bavaria was a deep spiritual experience, bringing together personal memories linked to places well known to me and pastoral initiatives towards an effective proclamation of the Gospel for today.

I thank God for the interior joy which he made possible, and I am also grateful to all those who worked hard for the success of this Pastoral Visit.

As is the custom, I will speak more of this during next Wednesday's general audience.

At this time, I wish also to add that I am deeply sorry for the reactions in some countries to a few passages of my address at the University of Regensburg, which were considered offensive to the sensibility of Muslims.

These in fact were a quotation from a medieval text, which do not in any way express my personal thought.

Yesterday, the Cardinal Secretary of State published a statement in this regard in which he explained the true meaning of my words.

I hope that this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of my address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with great mutual respect.

Pope remarks reveal harder stance

By Peter Gould BBC News website Sept. 17, 2006

The furore over the Pope's remarks about Islam has left many Catholics inside and outside the Vatican shaking their heads in disbelief.

Aides of Benedict XVI are dismayed that a quotation used to illustrate a philosophical argument should have provoked such anger from Muslims.

But for others, the row has highlighted their concerns about the Pope's attitude towards the Church's relations with the Islamic world.

The first year of his papacy passed off without controversy. Yet he was quietly planning a number of key changes in the Vatican hierarchy.

When Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope in 2005, it was assumed that he would follow closely the policies of his predecessor, John Paul II.

Diverging views

On many Church issues, the two men were completely in sync. Like the Polish pope, Benedict XVI could be relied upon to uphold the traditional teachings of the Church.

But on one key issue, Vatican-watchers detected a divergence in the views of the two men: the Vatican's attitude towards Islam.

John Paul II wanted to reach out to other religions and in 2001, on a visit to Syria, he became the first pope to set foot in a mosque.

It was a gesture intended to help end centuries of hostility and suspicion between the two religions.

Benedict XVI undoubtedly wants to achieve better relations with Islam, but there is an important proviso.

It can be summed up in a single word: reciprocity. It means that if Muslims want to enjoy religious freedom in the West, then Christians should have an equal right to follow their faith in Islamic states, without fear of persecution.

Re-shuffle

One of the first signs of a toughening of the Vatican's stance came with the removal from office of Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald.

The British-born cleric ran a Vatican department that promoted dialogue with other religions. A distinguished scholar on Arab affairs, he was an acknowledged expert on the Islamic world.

The decision by Benedict XVI to remove him from his post, and send him to Egypt as papal nuncio, was widely seen as a demotion.

Some wondered about the wisdom of the move.

Father Thomas Reese, a Jesuit scholar and an authority on the workings of the Vatican, told the BBC news website of his concerns: "The Pope's worst decision so far has been the exiling of Archbishop Fitzgerald," he said in an interview in April this year.

"He was the smartest guy in the Vatican on relations with Muslims. You don't exile someone like that, you listen to them.

"If the Vatican says something dumb about Muslims, people will die in parts of Africa and churches will be burned in Indonesia, let alone what happens in the Middle East.

"It would be better for Pope Benedict to have Fitzgerald close to him."

That warning now seems prophetic.

Did nobody at the Vatican anticipate the way the Pope's words might be taken out of context, and the likely reaction?

Since the 9/11 terror attacks on America, and the subsequent invasion of Iraq, nobody has been in any doubt about the importance of promoting a better understanding between Christianity and Islam.

The sensitivity of Muslims about their religion was made clear last year by the publication in a Danish newspaper of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.

The caricatures, re-printed in a number of Western countries, caused outrage in Islamic nations, leading to riots and acts of violence.

Daunting task

Pope Benedict has spoken of the responsibility of religious leaders to "work for reconciliation through genuine dialogue".

His task now appears even more daunting, with real concern being voiced about the possibility of a violent backlash from extremists in the Islamic world.

The Pope has said he is sorry if his words caused offence, and that may go some way to satisfying Muslim opinion.

It is often argued that a real dialogue with Islam requires an open debate, even at the risk of sometimes causing offence.

But the Pope is now acutely aware that wherever he is speaking, his words will be heard around the world by an audience ready to analyse every nuance of meaning.

He may have another opportunity to explain himself to Muslims in November, when he is scheduled to visit Turkey.

In the meantime, the Vatican will be giving a lot more thought to the words and actions needed to promote better relations between the world's two major religions.

Pope Benedict XVI and Islam  BBC News website Sept. 17, 2006
As Pope Benedict XVI faces criticism from Muslim leaders for remarks made during a speech in Germany, the BBC's religious affairs correspondent, Rahul Tandon, looks at earlier views he expressed during his time as a cardinal.

This is not the first time Pope Benedict has been at the centre of criticism for his views on Islam.

Before becoming Pope, Cardinal Ratzinger, as he was known, was considered a theological conservative.

He appeared to be uncomfortable with Pope John Paul II's attempts to improve dialogue with the Islamic world. His predecessor was the first pontiff to step inside a mosque, during a visit to Syria in 2001.

During his time as a cardinal, Pope Benedict opposed Turkey's bid to join the European Union, saying it belonged to a different cultural sphere, adding that its admission would be a grave error against the tide of history.

And in 1996, he wrote that Islam had difficulty in adapting to modern life.

'New barbarism'

However, since his consecration, Pope Benedict has surprised many with his attempts to improve dialogue with the Muslim world. He is due to visit Turkey in November as part of that process.

But there have been signs of his earlier views.

Last year he accused Muslim leaders in Germany of failing to steer their youth from what he described as the darkness of a new barbarism.

Pope Benedict is under increasing pressure to clarify the remarks he made during his speech at Regensburg University.

For many, that will require a clarification of the relationship he wishes to develop between the Catholic Church and Islam.

In quotes: Muslim reaction to Pope  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5348436.stm

Muslim political and religious leaders around the world have been reacting to a speech by Pope Benedict XVI in which he mentioned the Prophet Muhammad.

PAKISTANI PRESIDENT PERVEZ MUSHARRAF

Our strategy must clearly oppose the sinister tendencies to associate terrorism with Islam and discrimination against Muslims, which are giving rise to an ominous alienation between the west and the world of Islam.

MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER ABDULLAH AHMAD BADAWI

The Pope must not take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created. The Vatican must now take full responsibility over the matter and carry out the necessary steps to rectify the mistake.

SAUDI GRAND MUFTI SHEIKH ABDUL AZIZ AL-SHEIKH

This is all a lie ... Islam is far from terrorism and was spread only through the conviction of peoples who saw the good and justice of Islam.

EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER AHMED ABOUL GHEIT

This was a very unfortunate statement and it is a statement that shows that there is a lack of understanding of real Islam. And because of this we are hopeful that such statements and such positions would not be stated in order to not allow tension and distrust and recriminations to brew between the Muslim as well as the west.

PALESTINIAN PRIME MINISTER ISMAIL HANIYA

In the name of our Palestinian people... we express our condemnation of the statements of his Excellency the Pope, against Islam as a belief, Sharia, history, and a lifestyle.

PAKISTANI PARLIAMENT

The derogatory remarks of the Pope about the philosophy of jihad and Prophet Muhammad have injured sentiments across the Muslim world and pose the danger of spreading acrimony among the religions.

HAMID ANSARI, CHAIRMAN OF INDIA'S MINORITY COMMISSION

The language used by the Pope sounds like that of his 12th-Century counterpart who ordered the crusades... It surprises me because the Vatican has a very comprehensive relationship with the Muslim world".

DIN SYAMSUDDIN, HEAD OF MUHAMMADIYAH, INDONESIA'S SECOND LARGEST MUSLIM ORGANISATION

The Pope's statements reflect his lack of wisdom. It is obvious from the statements that the Pope doesn't have a correct understanding of Islam.

AHMAD KHATAMI, IRANIAN CLERIC

It is unfortunate to see that the leader of the world's Christians is so ill-informed about Islam and speaks so shamelessly.

Muslims around the world would surely react to such weak arguments and will invite those who misunderstand Islam to learn about the religion. We say that such insults will spread the influence of Islam further.

MOHAMMED MAHDA AKEF, EGYPTIAN MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD

The remarks do not express correct understanding of Islam and are merely wrong and distorted beliefs being repeated in the West.

SHEIKH YOUSSEF AL-QARDAWI, QATARI MUSLIM CLERIC AND HEAD OF ISLAMIC SCHOLARS' ASSOCIATION

Our hands are outstretched and our religion calls for peace, not for war, for love not for hatred, for tolerance, not for fanaticism, for knowing each other and not for disavowing each other.

We condemn this and we want to know the explanation of this and what is intended by this. We call on the pope, the pontiff, to apologise to the Islamic nation because he has insulted its religion and Prophet, its faith and Sharia without any justification."

ALI BARDAKOGLU, SENIOR TURKISH MUSLIM

I do not see any use in somebody visiting the Islamic world who thinks in this way about the holy prophet of Islam. He should first rid himself of feelings of hate.

SALIH KAPUSUZ, DEPUTY LEADER OF TURKEY'S RULING AK PARTY

The owner of those unfortunate and arrogant comments, Benedict XVI, has gone down in history, but in the same category as Hitler and Mussolini.

He seems to have a mindset that comes from the darkness of the Middle Ages. He is a poor thing that has not benefited from the spirit of reform in the Christian world. It looks like an effort to revive the mentality of the Crusades.

GRAND AYATOLLAH MOHAMMAD HUSSEIN FADLALLAH, SENIOR LEBANESE SHIA CLERIC

We do not accept the apology through Vatican channels... and ask him to offer a personal apology - not through his officials - to Muslims for this false reading

ORGANISATION OF ISLAMIC CONFERENCE STATEMENT

The OIC hopes that this sudden campaign does not reflect a new trend for the Vatican policy toward the Islamic religion ... and it expects the Vatican to express its real vision of Islam.

DR MUHAMMAD ABDUL BARI, MUSLIM COUNCIL OF BRITAIN

One would expect a religious leader such as the Pope to act and speak with responsibility and repudiate the Byzantine emperor's views in the interests of truth and harmonious relations. Regrettably, the Pope did not do so and this has understandably caused a lot of dismay and hurt.

BARCELONA, 15 Sep.2006 (EUROPA PRESS) -

Agence France-Presse  ALGER Le vendredi 15 septembre 2006
