Time to abandon hypocrisy

It appears that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will be attending the Euro-Mediterranean Summit to be held in Barcelona Nov. 27-28 to make an appeal to European leaders: It's high time to abandon a hypocritical approach to terrorism.

The Barcelona Euromed meeting will gather around a central theme, "Alliance of Civilizations," but two dossiers the Turkish premier will submit to his counterparts far from reflect the existence of such a concept in relations between the participating countries.

One of those reports that Erdoğan will present, prepared by the Turkish Religious Affairs Directorate, elaborates on attacks on Muslims and Muslim places of worship in several European countries, charging that the attacks were “perpetuated in part by influence of some Western politics, media, official organizations and foundations." Efforts to "stain the reputation" of Muslims are uncovered in the report, which also looks at "efforts to pin all Muslims with an image of being potential terrorists."

The most striking analysis contained in the report is found in the final section, which draws attention to the intent to provoke crimes against Muslims by certain politicians and media organizations. The findings of the report, unfortunately, are amazing:

1- "Whether or not the media condemns these crimes against Muslims, they also give space to negative reports on Muslims at the same time. While arson attacks on mosques are reported as being isolated incidents, individual actions such as Sept. 11 and the murder of Theo Van Gogh are presented by some sources as representing all Muslims. Some politicians and official organizations have not responded constructively or positively to Muslim undertakings in their societies, going so far as to try and prevent them at times and in doing so hoping to increase their own political clout by propagating a negative image of Muslims."

2- "The atmosphere after Sept. 11 has become a way to portray all Muslims as potential terrorists. Unease among Europeans followed, with irrational fear and anti-Muslim feelings prevalent. Muslims living in Europe began to encounter more and more negative experiences in their daily lives, coming face-to-face with unpleasant behavior solely based on their religion. All of these factors open the way for the creation and nurturing of a tense environment, which in itself only fans the fires of violent incidents and attacks."

One may question, of course, to what extent it might be reasonable to present such a report at the summit -- a joint effort by Erdoğan and his Spanish counterpart to “ally civilizations” against “alienation of civilizations” if not “confrontation of civilizations.” However, what's the use of meeting and discussing an “alliance of civilizations” without considering the current global situation?

The second report the prime minister is taking to Barcelona is even more serious than the first as it cites the hypocrisy of some leading European countries in dealing with terrorism.

This second report documents the failures in anti-terror cooperation of some leading European countries while underlining important recent steps taken by other countries in that regard, citing Germany as an example.

From the Roj TV scandal in Denmark to the Fehriye Erdal judicial tragicomedy in Belgium to the negligence and ignorance of some European governments in dealing with both the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) urban terrorist group, they are all documented in this second report, which ends with an appeal that it's high time to put an end to the “your terrorist is not my terrorist,” hypocrisy.

Very much like the “human shields” a dictator recently used to prevent attacks on its key installations, some countries exploit “freedom of expression” or “free society” as “shields” against anti-terror cooperation. Those values are as dear to us as they are to them, but let's not forget that the most fundamental of the human rights is the right to life.

We just can't understand how a murderer of a leading businessman cannot be described as a terrorist because she did not use an automatic weapon in the attack or how an allied country can turn a blind eye to the operation of a separatist propaganda TV channel on its territory.
